At the weekend I went to see the final Downton Abbey movie. There was something rather incongruent about watching the British class system play out so elegantly while sitting in a cinema in Mauritius.
It was a lovely film, beautifully capturing the English countryside. Fun fact: thanks to the modernisation of Ascot, the racing scenes were actually filmed at Ripon racecourse. Ripon has a similar layout (a long straight followed by a right-hand bend), but crucially the public areas still retain their charming period details. Three hundred extras in full costume and not a hint of CGI!
The talented screenwriter Julian Fellowes tied up every loose end with a neat bow. I do hate endings that don’t end. And without giving anything away — don’t dash off before the credits roll.
It’s been a long time since I last went to the cinema in the UK, but I’m fairly sure tickets there aren’t the equivalent of £3.26. Here, cinema is a multilingual affair. The 6pm showing is always in English with French subtitles. Which only reminded me of how little I managed to learn after 18 months of Babbel and Duolingo. Turns out 15 minutes a day with a computerised owl does not make you fluent!
